THE MOUNTAIN ROAD.
very bad patches of rot-d, which are regular quagmires anil traps for the unwary in the winter time. If £100 more of the sum stated by Major Atkinson was expended in improving those places, there might be some chance of uninterrupted traffic along the road during the winter time. The above remarks are made in no captious spirit, but because we are anxious not only to see a good road, but also that the money expended upon it should not be thrown away, as has too often been the case hitherto. The present condition of the road between Hawera and Normanby is a case in point of a road on which the Government expended a large amount of money, and in consequence of sheer neglect, the gi-avelling has been more in the nature of a curse than a blessing to those who have to travel over that dilapidated road
