OPUNAKE.
(FROM OTJR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Opunake, Thursday.
I don't know if you are aware that the new road between here and Pungarehu has been fenced across in two places by the natives, near Opouo. This has been done on the troops evacuating the latter post, and since this act of aggression has been perp trated, it is a wonder the authorities have not moved in the matter, and removed the obstructions, so as to permit travellers proceeding on a route which would be the saviiig of miles and heavy beach. But it appears the Government consider this end unworthy of any consideration, or they would endeavor, before the 'winter sets in, to open this portion of the new road, instead of devoting all the time to the New Plymouth side, where it is exceptionally good. In a strategetical point of view, you cannot fail to see that the road from here to Pungarehu is most important, and should not be allowed to remain closed any longer by a Maori taiepa.
