MR. BRYCE'S RESIGNATION.

Since our last issue, it has been announced that the other Ministers were averse to Mr. Bryce's proposal " for a military advance on Parihaka on the occasion of the monthly meeting there on the 17th, and the arrest of Te Whiti. Mr. Bryce's ultimatum was — ' to carry out his views or accept his resignation. 1 " In respect to his action in the matter, we note that many of our contemporaries blame the ex Native Minister for having acted hastily and without due deliberation in this matter. It is worthy of notice, however, that Mr. Bryce had a far better supply of accurate information at his disposal than any one of his now numerous critics ; and that he is a man " slow to resolve," and one whose reputation for calm and deliberate judgment is not excelled by that of any man in the political world of New Zealand. Under these circumstances, it is well to suspend criticism until all the facts are before the country. It is well known that Te Whiti has summoned every man whose attendance he can command, to be present at the next Parihaka meeting ; and it is quite on the cards that Mr. Biyce had information before him in respect to the present aspect of affairs at Parihaka, which influenced his decision, but which it would be impolitic to publish just at present. A careful study of Mr. Bryce's political career for some years has induced us to respect his judgment and confide in his discretion, and it will need far more weighty evidence than that contained in the meagre and incomplete record now before the public to upset the opinion already expressed in these columns.
