Carlyle, Last night. 'On Tuesday evening the members of the Patea Rifle Volunteers met for the purpose of electing two officers in room of Messrs. Dale and Fraser. For the place of first lieutenant, there were three candidates — Messrs. Chapman, Tregear, and King. The last-named, however, withdrew, leaving two to contest the vacancy. The result was : — Chapman, 28 ;. Tregear, 9. It was generally understood that Mr. Tregear had withdrawn ; but he was present during the election. For the place of sub-lieutenant, the ballot resulted as follows : — King, 30 ; Tregear, 2. Mr. Tregear addressed the meeting, thanking those members who had voted for him. Messrs. Chapman* and King were declared elected.. It was resolved to proceed with the new uniforms without further delay. The corps will subscribe to the New Zealand Rifle Association, thus enabling any member to compete at the Nelson . meeting ,in March. Five members have intimated their intention of<?oing. . Amongst the passengers per Patea was Captain Bendall, who has for some time past been a resident here, superintending the launch and repairing of the Jane Anderson, on behalf of the underwriters.

In the rifle match last Saturday, Patea Bifles versus "Wellington Guards, the latter scored 850 against our 366, thus losing the match by 16 points. The following is the team elected to play against Marton Cricket Club at Wanganui to-morrow ; — Heenan, Coutts, F. Head, Kitching, Pringle, Arundell, Dixon, Tennent, Shields, Taplin, and L. Bead.

The Patea Garrick Club have been challenged by the Dramatic Autborb' Association for performing the play, " Cool as a cucumber," without authority. The club wisely paid the license fee, 10s.

In spite of the wet weather, Mr. Cowem's ordinary stock sale at Kakaramea attracted a numerous company. There was a good demand, and prices show a slight improvement on last sale.
