This was the chief event of the meeting, and was remarkable in the way it was made a dead certainty for one horse, It resulted in a fatal accident. At the hack of the course, Libeller and King Quail came to grief, resulting in one of the most disastrous occurrences at any of the Auckland race meetings. From the best evidence, it appears that Libeller fell with his rider, Nolan, and King Quail, with his rider, Carrington, fell on the top of them. Nolan was killed on the spot.
