HAWERA ROAD BOARD.

SaTOBDAT, 18TH DIOEMBKB.

Present — Messrs. Hunter (chair■^nan), Gane, Williams, Morrison, and Eobson.

CLAIM FOR COMPENSATION.

Mr. H. B. Pearce, of Kakaramea, claimed compensation for damage done to his section, through the deviation of the Mells road, Whakamara.— lt was resolved that the letter be acknowledged.

BRIDGING THE TONGAHOE.

Messrs. Thomas Bobson and James Morrison, members of the board, wrote to the chairman, urging that the matter of advancing ,£l2O for the erection of the bridge over the Tongahoe should be further considered, and that proceedings should be stayed until after the meeting of the board.

The Chairman said he had refrained from speaking to Messrs. Hobbs, Buchaaan, and the other parties who had leases on the Whereroa reserve, because he felt that the board had been going too fast. He did not object to the erection of the bridge — on the contrary, he would like to see it built; but he was not prepared to face the consequences, and perhaps giving compensation to some of the lessees of the land through which theroad wouldrun. After some discussion, Mr. Gane moved that a committee — consisting of the chairman, Mr. Williams, and the mover — be appointed t6 wait upon Mr. Davidson, and request him to show his lease, so as to ascertain whether there is a reservation for a road.

Mr. Williams seconded the motion, which was carried ; it being understood that if no provision was made for a road, further proceedings should not be taken by the board.

MANAWAPOU ROAD.

It was resolved that the engineer should be ordered to pull down the fence across the Manawapou road, on 2fr. Qu.iallva.a s & !tan<J, as th<3 tatter had not complied with the resolution passed by the board for the erection of a gate.

NGAIRE ROADS.

Mr. Twigg stated that he had gone over most of the roads in the lower Ngaire district, and had made a note of the works required. Mr. Robson moved that tenders be called for a culvert and cutting on Skeet-road, and for a culvert and cutting through sections 44 and 47, block X., and sections 2 and 3, block X. ; and that Mr. Morrison and the mover be empowered to open the tenders ; to be in by the Bth January. Mr. Gane seconded the resolution, which was curried.

It was resolved that the Secretary should endeavor to procure a plan of the lower Ngaire from the Chief Surveyor.

ADVANCE TO CONTRACTORS.

Mr. Eobson proposed that an adraaee of J»2O he made bo Mesera. Ai)cman and Commerie, as progress payment for work done on the line leading from Boylan to Austin road. THE NORMANBY-HAWERA ROAD.

The Chairman stated that if the road waa allowed to utand much longer, they would be into the winter. He believed it was the intention of the county council to strike another rate, so as to be able to do the cutting on the Patea hill, and other work. Now, he considered it would be better - rate of 2d. in the Jfi, than to have to submit to an extra rate of 3d. in tbe £, to be levied by the county council. He considered it would be better to write to the Goverment, asking them to put the road in repair, and that then the road board would take it over. He was quite satisfied the work could be done cheaper by the road board than by the county council. Mr. Morrison remarked that it was practically a main road, and that the snail coach and all the principal traffic ■went that way. Mr. Gane said the road was in a disgraceful state, and if the county council or the Government would not maintain the road, it ought to be done by the road board.

It was resolved that the chairman should write to the Government on the subject.

In answer to Mr. Morrison, the Chairman, said that the county council did not appear to be clear as to what ■was the main road. They did not care to argue the point. Some of them wanted to argue that roads running through Kakarainea and Waverley were in a similar position to the Mountain road, and had just as much right to be maintained by tbe county, Although, as tbe members of the board were aware, the cases were entirely different.

VALUATION ROLLS.

A tender was received from Mr. Bate for compiling a valuation roll for £15.

Mr. G&ns vrgeA fclb&fc the vtdu&tioaa should be done by the members, and the clerical work by the secretary. By that way, .£lO would be saved, which could be devoted to the roads.

Mr. Morrison and other members dissented, and thought it better to have a disinterested party to do the valuations.

After some further discussion, on the motion of the Chairman, seconded by Mr. Morrison, Mr. Bate's tender was accepted.

PACT ROAD.

Mr. Williams moved that the engineer be- instructed to lay off a cutting on Pain road. Mr. Gane seconded the motion. There was a daUy increasing population — (laughter)— and the people bad a job to get to their homes.

, The Chairman pointed out that a resolution had already been passed to the effect that no further work should be done on the deferred payment land, as the account was overdrawn. He moved that the matter be allowed to stand over for the present. Mr. Morrison seconded the amendment, which was carried ; the mover and seconder of the resolution consenting to its withdrawal when made aware of the financial position of the board.

accounts. Accounts, amounting to J6lO 10s., were passed for payment. The Board adjourned at 4.30 p.m.
