The first annual competition for the Patea Cadets 1 Cup took place on Saturday last. Conditions : 100, 150, 200, ana 300 yards ; third-class target, five shots at each, and any position. Gr. Gowland secured the Cadets' Cup and £1, with a score of 63 ; J. Schultze being second with 62, and winner of a cup presented by Mr. \V. Odgers, and 15s. The result of the handicap was as follows ; —

The same evening, at the drill hall, the prizes were gracefully presented by Miss Annie Hirst, who also presented Captain Black with a handsome silver pencil on behalf of the cadets.
3\ba Jaa© Anu&rßtxa, RCDooner, bas Sor some days been in a position for being launched over the breakwater, but a strong N.W. wind which has prevailed has rendered the operation too dangerous hitherto. When the weather moderates the launch will take place. A meeting of insurance agents was held last evening at Mr. Homer's office, seven of the eight companies being represented. It was resolved that each ageut recommend his company to subscribe £5 towards the Patea fire brigade for the year 1881, this sum also to be recommended as an annual donation, if the efficiency of the corps be maintained. The question of fixing a tariff of rates of fire insurance was next discussed, but did not appear to meet the views of all present. A special meeting on the sbbj-'ct, however, will be held on sth January next.
The Hart family give their drawingroom entertainment, " Happy Hours," in the Town Hall this evening. Yesterday there was some excitement over the closing of the applications for deferred payment land at Manaia and Otakeho.
