THE COUNTY CHAIRMANSHIP.

On Friday, the 24th instant, tbe members of the County Council will be called upon to elect a chairman for the ensuing year. So far as we have been able to ascertain, there is not much probability of a contest. It has, however, been stated that Mr. Bridge, who occupied the posi1 iaon of chairman previously, would be asked to come forward, bnt -we are aoi aware that he intends doing so. Mr. Homer's name has also been mentioned, but that gentleman has definitely stated that he has no intention of seeking the post of honor. From a short acquaintance with the members of the council, we are inclined to think tbat they cannot do better than re-elect Mr. Dale, the present chairman, if he will consent to stand. He is not, by any means, a brilliant man, but he is prompt in the conduct of business, and endeavors to be impartial ; in giving lus rulings he always takes pains to find out that he is on the right track, and he invariably continues to keep the attention of members confined to the subject that is being debated. As long as the boundaries of the present county continue as they are, and so long as the two " fag-ends," as Mr. Milne once termed them, are unconnected by rail, it is uudoubtedly an advantage to have the chairman residing close to where most of the business of the- council has to be transacted. Different matters crop up from time to time, which a clerk, no matter how efficient he may be, is not competent to deal with. For the present, we cannot see that the council can do better than .re-elect Mr. Dale.
