NOTES BY WHIP.

The annual races, under tbe auspices of the Patea Jockey Club, will take place OU Friday next. Owing to the impeCUuiosity of the club, the stakes ore small, and the events and entries few in number ; consequently there is not much interest felt in the forthcoming meeting. It is to be hoped the club will be in a better financial position next year. For the Derby, only three are likely to come to the post— Frivolity, St. Clair, and TallyHo. The latter colt has ran so unkindly 6&as &r, that I bhink L© "will not meet with many backers : but I am of opinion that he is good enough to win this event, if he could only be induced to run straight. Failing this, I think the' winner will be found to be Frivolity. There are six acceptors for the Handicap Hurdles ; but it is probable that Chandler and Raven will have the pen put through their names, and be reserved for the Maiden. Old Ireland has got a crusher; Gazelle's jumping is not to be depended on, besides not having a great deal of foot. Sunray also lacks pace, but being a good jumper, I should not be surprised — if the top weight cannot win it— at Mr. Gower's nag pulling off this race. According to tbe running at Waverley last week, the Maiden ought to be a safe thing for Chandler, providing he does not go for the Hurdles. Only two are likely to face the starter for the Railway Handicap — Hailstorm, 9st. 61b., and Redeemer, Bst. 131b. The latter may possibly turn the tables on Hailstorm in this race, though I am of opinion that the roan can give the chestnut 71b. and beat him.
