NOTES BY WHIP.
The results of the Waverley races were given in your last issue. It was a very successful meeting : the weather was fine, attendance good, capital racing, and close finishes being the order of the day. The course was rather heavy, consequently the time was not particularly good. The Hawera contingent were not very successful, Redeemer alone securing a win in the Forced Handicap. He is a fairly gocd horse, but is so uncertain that h would never carry any of my money. Sincerity Was disqualified for crossing in the Guineas . therefore, the stakes went to the second horse, Camelia. In the Handicap Hurdles, Grey Momus was over - weighted, and came to grief early in the race. Victory was snatched from the favorite (King Don) by Lady Mary, by half a length. The Flying Handicap was a good race, with a close finish, resulting in a win for Otawa by half a length from Eedeemer ; and the Maiden waa easily secured by Camelia faiimer of tha Gvuvms), Chau<£tet> the favorite, being second. For the WaverleyWaitotara Handicap, the field of eight was reduced to four, Opawa being made the favorite, and ho did not disappoint his backers, as he won the race, after a hard struggle, by a short head from Otawa. The Ladies' Purse was won by Raven by a noae» on the poat, owing entirely to Mr, Mclvor's Bheev good riding, for which he was loudly cheered. Redeemer was credited with the Forced Handicap, thus bringing a successful meeting to a close. The totalisator was well patronised, £23 falling to the share of the club. The Marton-Rangitikei club gives £685 at its next meeting. Jockey Club handicap, of 20050v8., is the top prize. A good many horses have been nominated for the Auckland meeting, and a fair sprinkling of the New Zealand cracks are amongst the number.
The new rules recently passed by the Canterbury Jockey Club will come into force on the Ist of the new year. It is stated that Mr. Vallance intends bringing an action against the stewards of the Victorian Racing Club for disqualifying 1 Mato. It is expected that the disqualification may he rescinded. B&povt says that Mata carried £70,000 on him in Melbourne Cup. The sporting contributor to the Saturday Advertiser (" Mazeppa"), referring to Hailstorm's double victory at the late meeting at Wanganui, says "it stamps him as a most useful and consistent animal, always formidable in moderate company." I should like to know what 41 Mazeppa " considers " moderate company." The time given for the Railway Plate, 1J miles, w.f.a., was 2min. 47sec. The winner, Hailstorm, had just previously -won tfio Wauganui Stakes Handicap, two miles and a distance, carrying 9st. 21b. On referring to some of the results of the recent racing in Victoria, I find that the time given for the Derby (won by Grand Flaneur) was 2min. 44sec. Maiden Plate, H miles, w.f.a., 2min. 44seo. Darling Stakes, 1£ miles, w.f.a., 2min. 44seo, I cannot see that Hailstorm Buffers much by comparison.
