A notice in the Gazette revokes the appointment of Major Kemp as a native assessor. The appointment was made through the blundering of a clerk. Mr. Fearon, who was lately confined in the Lunatic Asylum in Wellington as in* sane, broke out again oil Ms way to Nelson, and on arrival was placed in the asylum there. At the R.M. Court, the charge against the captain and steward, of the ship St. Leonards, for being concerned in the lucent smuggling case, was heard. The steward was fined £25,, and the charge against the captain was dismissed. The remanded charges of conspiraoy against C. Simpson, of Bainesse Station, Foxton, and J. McLellan, manager of the Oroua Downs Station, was continued on Wednesday. Mr. Stevens, the auctioneer at Bulls, gave evidence to the effect that the price paid for the cattle was a fair one. The Magistrate, in giving his decision, said he had carefully considered the evidence from every point, and came to the conclusion that the charge of conspiracy could not he sustained. Tlie information was, therefore, dismissed. Westport, Last night.

Over 5000 coupons were received for the Canterbury Times prize of JESO for correctly placing the first three horses in the C.J.C. Handicap, which was won by Mr. Digby, of Cbristchurch. A man named John Strott, while leada bull into the judges ring, was rushed and gored. He was quickly released, but sustained very severe injuries. Dunedin, Last night.

A four-roomed house in South Dunedin, occupied by Thomas Allcbim, was burnt down early this morning. The furniture was insured for in the National, and Shannon, the owner, had the house insured in the Standard for £150.
A gentleman in town has received a letter from Mr. Alexander, stating that the Australian team are anxious to visit New Zealand, playing two or three days in each of the principal towns, if suitable terms can be arranged. A party of three working at Hindon got three pounds weight of gold for six works' work in Charles Gully. Auckland, Last night. Kre specimens of gold from Te Aroba, estimated to yield ten ounces to the ton, hare been lodged in town.
