CRICKET.
PATEA V. HAWERA.
The first match of the season between these two old rival clubs came off on Saturday last on the Hawera ground, and resulted in an easy victory for the Hawera club, on the first innings. The morning was so web that ifc seemed very doubtful whether the Patea team would turn up ; but, like true cricketers, they were not to be deterred by either rain or wind, and were rewarded by as fine an afternoon as could be desired. The ground was in good order, though somewhat dead after the rain. The game commenced at 12.30, the Patea team going first to the wickets, Homer and Dixon facing the bowling of Bayly and Thomson. Dixon retired after making 3, and then Dasent came, but after adding 1 -to the score, made way for Read. Fraser went on in Thomson's place, and got Homer's wicket, and Coutts came, but only made 1, and Heenan joined Eead, who was running up a score. Heenan, the best bat of the team, seemed likely to make a stand, but after adding 3 to the total, a good ball from Southey dismissed him. Both bowlers were now in splendid form, Southey taking three wickets with three consecutive balls. The indefatigable secretary of the Patea Club, was the only other man to make a stand, and the innings closed for 48 runs. Unfortunately, the competition for the MeGuire Cup, which was taking place at the Waihi range prevented three of the Patea men, who were firing, from arriving in time to go in, and substitutes had to be found for them. The fielding of the Hawera team was a great improvement on anything we have • seen this season, Wanklyn, as long-stop, tieing in first-rate form.
Beresford and Southey were the first to represent Hawera at the wickets, opposed to the bowling of Dasent and Coutts. The bowling was good, and no stand was made until Miller joined Beresford, who was playing in his usual style, but who soon afterwards retired, caught by Coutts, having put together 12 runs, and Parrington took his place. A good stand was itow made,' but a swinger from Dasent dismissed Mill r, who had contributed 15 to the total. Heenan soon afterwards sent Parrington's leg-stump flying with a splendid ball. Fraser, 8, and Bayly, not out, 5, were the' only two to make anything of a score after this, and the innings closed for 77. The bowline and fielding of the visitors were very good, with one or two exceptions, or the Hawera team should have made a far larger score.
After a spell of a few minutes, the Patea captain sent Heenan and Bead to the wickets, and for a time runs came fast. Heenan was the first to go, bowled by Southey, and soon after Bayly got Read lbw for 10. Bayly and Southey being dead on, the wickets fell fast, and when the end came 31 runs only had be n scored. Hawera required two runs to win, but time would not allow of the game being continued, so the match was decided on the first innings. The follow-
