THE EX-NATIVE MINISTEb's PROMISES. A letter was received from Major Brown, Qivil Commissioner, stating that he had selected town section 782, at Stratford, for Mrs. D' Alton, Normanby, in fulfilment of the promise made to her by the Hon. J. Sheehan, when Native Minister. On the motion of Mr. Standish, seconded by Mr. Kelly, it was resolved, " That the Civil Commissioner be informed thab bhe BoarsL-h&s no power to grant lands in fulfilment of promises made by Ministers, but that the only way in which lands can be dealt with in cases like that referred to is by making the land a permanent reserve, or finding the funds for the applicant to purchase in the ordinary manner, or by special A<jt of the Xegislafcure." EOTAI COMMISSION. Major Brown informed the Board that he had selected, with the approval of the Royal Commissioner, 100 acres of southern portion of Section 15, block XIII., Ngaire (subject to the removal of totara by the Government), in fulfilment of a promise to the remains of a small tribe named Ngatirakei, of which Inwhakaruru and a few others are interested. Mr. Kelly moved, and Mr. Syme seconded, "That the letter of the Civil Commissioner be referred to the Government for consideration, as the Board has no power to deal with the matter." — Carried. ROADS AT MIBHIRST. Mr. Fookes informed the Board that, in compliance with, his engagement to spend .£2,000 upon roads in the Midhirst Special Settlement, he had already spent .£1,951 Is. 6d., leaving a balance of £48 18s. 6d., which he proposed, with the sanction of the Board, to hand over to the Monganui Highway Board, conditionally upon their satisfying the Waste Lands Board that the money was spent upon roads within the district. It was resolved, "That the Board cannot consider Mr. Fookes' proposal." APPLICATION TO PURCHASE. An application was received from G. J. Newman, to purchase that portion of the old Omata road, fronting section No. 13, Grey district.— The application was deferred. DEFERRED PAYMENT LANDS. The following applications for land on deferred payments were granted : — M. Donitz, section 51, block VI., Huiroa, containing 78 acres ; A. M. Campbell, section 54, block XIII., Ngaire, 320 acres; J. Campbell, section 53, block XIII., Ngaire, 320 acres ; J. T. Mabfey, section 49, block VI., Ngaire, 80 acres ,• J. Muori, section 47, block VI., Ngaire, 120 acres.
