THE OKAIAWA SETTLEMENT.
The applications received at Hawera on Monday for the land in and around the township of Okaiawa, which will be offered for sale to-day by Mr. Wray, Commissioner of Crown Lands, were as follows : — Village allotments, seven ; suburban deferred payments, two ; small farm deferred payments, 20. On Tuesday four applications\were received at Hawera for section 60, which had not been applied for on the previous day. Ten applications were received at Carlyle on Monday, but there were none yesterday. In the village, there are three applications from Hawera for section 22, containing 3r. 35 p., and one from Carlyle ; for section 23, 3r. 35p., two from Hawera, and one from Carlyle ; for sections 30 and 31, one applicant for eaoh from Hawera, but none from Carlyle. For the suburban deferred payment sections, there is one application from Hawera for section 15, 10 a., and also J for section 54, 4 a. Br. 83p., but none ftom Carlyle. All the other suburban sections are unapplied for. The 6mall farm sections, which are to be disposed of by lot, have met with much greater favor, and all of them have been applied for. Section B—Six8 — Six applicants from Hawera ; none from Carlyle. Section 9— Three from Hawera ; one from Carlyle. Section 10 — One from Carlyle ; none from Hawera. Section 57 7- Two from Hawera ; none from Carlyle. Section 58 — Three from Hawera; one from Carlyle. Section 59 — Five from Hawera ; five from Carlyle. Section 60 — Four from Hawera;, none •from Carlyle'. One of the applicants for .section 59 withdrew yesterday morning, &ni afterwards put in for section 60 : he will thus have only three to contend against, as compared with nine for the other section, so that he may, to a certain extent, consider himself lucky. Telegraphic applications were received at Carlyle for sections 8, 58, 59, and 60, but were declared informal. One person applied for section 61, but although marked in the map, it was not amongst those gazetted for sale ; but the applicant Was aiiawed lo transfer- yesterday; bo dectwnr 60. ' Sections &, 6, bs; 5& aai.QQ
contain 50 acres each; section 10, 21a. 2r.; Section 57, 33a. lr. Bp. These comprise the small farm settlement. In the village, only four sections, out of twenty-four, have been applied for ; whilst there were only two applications for suburban sections, although twenty-one, varying from la. lr. 25p. up to 10a., were offered for sale. The public, judging from the number of applications, have not much faith in the new township. It is too near 55ormanby to do xnncb goo& .* thab appears to be the general opinion throughout the district.
