The arrivals of wool to date for the next auctions amount to 60,000 bales. The tone of the wool market at present is quiet.
New York, October 21.
Intelligence has been received that a storm of a most severe character has passed over Lake Michigan, and caused great lpss of life and shipping ; nine vessels have become total wrecks, and a number of others have suffered severely, and over a hundred persons have perished.
The commissioners supervising the elections now proceeding have discovered that gross bribery was being used on the part of several candidates.
Capetown, October 21.
Telegrams have been received announcing that the force under Colonel Clarke, which was sent to the relief of the Cape Bifles, at Mafeting, has arrived there, and after severe fighting with the Basutos, who had invested the place, a junction of the two forces was effected.
Constantinople, October 21.
There are hopes that a satisfactory settlement may be arrived at by the delegates of the Great Powers and Turkey, now deliberating at Cettinge, regarding the cession of Dulcigno. The Porte's delegate has proposed that Dulcigno should be evacuated by the Turkish troops now in occupation, three hours before the time fixed for the Montenegrins to enter ttie town. It has not transpired whether the delegates of the Great Powers have accepted this proposal or not. The Porte has, moreover, withdrawn its demand that the status quo should, be maintained as regards the territory to the east of Scutari, and the doubts which existed as to the sincerity of the Ottoman Government have thus been removed.
Athens, October 21.
The Greek Parliament was opened today by the King in person. His Majesty, in his speech on the occasion, said that thr execution of the decisions of the Great Powers for the rectification of the frontier, imposed action on the part of Greece, and renders it necessary that her armaments should be increased. With this olojeet, ihe Parliament would »c asked to sanction the necessary loans being raised. His Majesty added that the regiments forming additions now being made to the Greek army would not be disbanded, until the object for which they were being mobilised had been obtained. St. Petersburg, October 21. His Majesty the Czar is recovering from his illness.
