SATURDAY, OCTOBEE 23, 18S0.

THE HAWEEA TOWN BOARD

It has been a matter of some surprise that the [Returning Officer should have been called upon to advertise on two occasions, •within a short space of time, that nominations would be received for the vacancy caused through the retirement of the late chairman of the Board. It might not unreasonably be discussed, seeing the apathy displayed, whether there can be any necessity for continuing the Town Board, although we think the weight of argument would be in favor of its retention. Wherever eight or ten hundred people are residing within a small area, special provision for their health and comfort will be required. Hawera, from its situation, should be as healthy as most places, and yet there has been a great deal of sickness prevalent during the past six months. With the approach of summer, it is even possible that the doctors' time may be more fully occupied. It is quite evident there is plenty of work to be done by a Town Board, and those who can afford to spare the time, and have any aptitude for public business, ought to come forward, like good citizens, and ungrudgingly perform their share. The sanitary condition of the town deserves the most serious consideration. There are many who would wish to see the cess-pit, piggery, and other abominations done away with, and stringent rules laid down for the preservation of the public health ; but if men of intelligence refuse to come forward, and aid in such a desirable work, the doctors, and it is to be feared the undertakers also, "will be called into homes which, under more favorable conditions, might have been proof against all forms of disease for many years to come. The nominations will close on Tuesday next, and it is to be hoped the Keturning Officer will not have to place the ratepayers under further unnecessary expense, through having to advertise again.
