CRICKET.

A cricket match was played on Saturday between an- eleven chosen from Ngajre, "Waihi, and Normanby, .and an eleven pick d from Mokoia and Hawera. The former were captained by Beresford, and the latter by Riddiford. Play commenced at about eleven o'clock, the Hawera captain and limes going first to the wickets. The bowling on the northern side -was rather wild, and 48 runs were scored from byes, leg-byes, wides, and no balls ; the total for Hawera being 163. Bayly, Riddiford, and Parrington made good scores for the Hawera side, and played a capital game, but some chances were not availed of' by the opposing team. Beresford and Arden went to the wickets for the Normanby side, and after a fine display of cricket, the captain was caught by Thomson, off Parrington, after scoring 25. Miller also showed up well, having put a dozen and a half together by pretty play. Goodson, who played on the same side, gave another indication of what he islikely to do, if he will only practice sufficiently. Blaker carried his bat out, after Griffiths Lad heen disposed 0$ 4, the total score standing at .70. In the second innings Johnßton scored 18, and Beresford 13, the former being caught by Cunningham, off Bayly, and the latter being bowled by Wanklyn. Towards the close of* the. match, there was an unfortunate dispute as to the time. The Hawera team asserted that they had agreed to go by a particular Watch, which happened to be slow, and that the other captain had acquiesced in the arrangement. All the watches in the pavffion being in favor of the northern side, they refused to send in any more men, although there were still two wickets to fall. It 'is a great pity that disputes should occur over a friendly game, and it might be well, to prevent a recurrence, to provide a clock for the pavilion, which might be properly regulated the morning of the match. Then, whatever arrangement was made, one side would be as likely to benefit as the other. We do not feel that we are competent judges in Bporting matters, but if both captains agreed to take the time by a particular Watch or clock, it seems, at all events, a common-sense view of the matter that the arrangementshould be final, whether the time-piece happened to be either slow or fast. But, after all, the matter in dispute was trivial, and should not be allowed to interfere with any other games, further than as a caution. The more precise the captains are the better. There will be less chances of misunderstandings if the arrangements are written down. The folJownig are the scores : — UAWXEA A3tJ> JSOSOIA.
