TARANAKI LAND BOARD.

(From the Taranaki Herald.)

The Land Board met on Monday. Present— The Chief Commissioner (in the chair), Messrs. Kelly. Standisb, Barleyman, Syme. and Crompton.

THE BOARD'S ACTIONS.

The following telegram was read from the Under-Secretary of Crown Lands : — Re your memo, of 21st September, Mr. Joshua Jones has been informed that Government cannot interfere with the action of the Board. lam directed to point out that under section 164 Land Act, 1877, outlying pieces of land cannot be sold at less than £2 per acre. The Chairman said the Board had -greed to give Mr. Fookes the aliobznenb formerly applied for by Mr. Jones, at the rate of 35s per acre, but it was found that the Board had no power to sell the land under £2 per acre. Mr. Fookes would accordingly be notified to pay the difference.

ELTHAM TILLAGE.

The Chairman read a telegram as follows from the Government re clearing of Eltham village site: — "There is no vote out of which funds could be provided for bush felling at Eltham, and it is considered there is already sufficient cleared for the railway to enable intending purchasers to judge of the quality of the land. The survey of Eltham can well wait until the rural lands in its vicinity are better settled."

The Chairman said it was not a question as to intending purchasers seeing the quality of the land, but it was necessary to clear the village site, in order to sell it. It was ridiculous to suppose that any one would buy a section in a village which was all standing bush, so that access could not be obtained to the allotment.

Mr. Barleyman said that an accommodation house wasmuch needed at Eltham, and no licensing bench would grant a license to a house, if the village was all standing bush. Mr. iteUy suggested that the land reaewed outside the village of Eltham should be cut up into rural sections of 10 acres and sold.

On the motion of Mr. Kelly, seconded by Mr. Syme, the following resolution was agreed to : — " That the Governor be recommended to declare that allotments Nos. 14; 15, 17, and 42, block 10, Ngaire, be declared a village settlement, under the name of Eltham ; and that allotments Nos. 14, 15, and 42 of block 10 be declared open for sale as small farms, in allotments of 10 acres, in the terms of section 21 of the Land Act, 1879."
