CHANGES IN RAILWAY DEPARTMENT.

It is tmderstood that the Government have determined to dispense with the'services of Mr. Conyers and Mr. Lawson, Commissioners of Railways, and notices to this effect have been sent them. Mr. Maxwell, who is at present Inspeoting Engineer of Public Works, is to be Commissioner of both Islands, and Mr. Hannay, the Traffic Manager of the Oamarii section, will he his assistant. This will be in accordance wifcb fcb© recommendations both of the Civil Service and of the Railway Commissioners. Mr. Maxwell is a young man who has .been acting as Assistant-Engineer in Charge;to Mr. Blackett. Mr. Hannay is. well known as an able manager, and one who has been, connected with railways all his life.
