CARLYLE.
; (PEOM OUE OWN CORKESPONDENT.) .Oarlyle, Tuesday. A vessel, drawing Bft. 9in.> is expected here from Kaipara with a cargo of timber for the railway breastwork. Messrs. Guthrie and Larnach, of Dunedin, are the shippers. It having been decided to form a fife and drum band in connection with our Volunteer corps, instruments were procured, and the band made its debut in public last evening. At the rifle range on Saturday, a fowling piece, presented for competition by Mr. D. __. Harris, was won by Private Graham with a score of 52 points. Mr. William Cowern's auction sale of breakwater plant on Saturday last drew a large company to the Heads, and in some instances Very ' high prices were obtained, particularly for the horses. Mr. Sherwood took advantage of the occasion to express his regret at the stoppage of the -works, which have hitherto shown such beneficial results to the district. To-day the members of the Harbor Board have proceeded to the Heads to inspect the breakwater works previous to taking over the same from the contractor. The new wharf is now making satisfactory progress.
