CARLYLE.

(PEOM OTTB OWN COBBESPONDXNT.)

Carlyxe, Tuesday. On Saturday, Mr. Williams's rifle was again fired for.. Private McLean, of the Waverley corps, was the winner. ColorSergeant King tied his score of 46," but was counted out, his score' at tbe last range being 14 as against 15. Private McLean having now been highest scorer twice, the rifle becomes his property. The scores were as follow ; the conditions being eight-inch bull's-eye, and any position: — . , -

On Friday evening last, -the Town Hall was the scene of the bachelors' hall. The programme was excellently carried out, and reflected great credit on the committee of management. One drawback was the limited area of our town hall, which was proved to be much too small for a gathering of this nature. Captain and Mrs Wray were amongst the guests present. Dancing terminated at a little after four in the morning. This is the first attempt of its kind on the part of the Patea bachelors, and it was a pleasing success.

On Saturday, the opening match of the Patea Cricket Club was played; .and took the form of married v. single. The latter lost the toss, and were put in to bat first. They scored 87, of which Messrs. Pringle and Heenan contributed 50 between them. The married gentlemen put together the respectable score of 65, Messrs. Jacomb and Tennent getting into double figures. Dr. Croft and Mr. Taplin showed good -bowling form. The doctor bad-hard lines, 'a few catches off' his bowling being badly missed. Mr. Heenan-'s innings was a good display ofgenuide oricket.
