OPENING OF THE RAILWAY TO WAITOTARA.

The opening of the Waitotara section of railway line took place on Thursday last. Of course there was a little jollifica* tion, although it was admitted that the time for the completion of the contract bad expired more than twelve months ago. Strange to say, Mr. Ballance thought there was more energy at the northern end of the district, and anticipated that the line would shortly be com* pleted to this town. It is with a feeling of regret that we noticed that Mr. Whiting declared' that about -50 picked laborers would shortly start for Australia. They are a fine class of workmen as ft rule, and if they could be retained by ft free grant of 50 acres land being offered to each of them, upon condition that they resided upon it for five years and unproved it, the State would probably make a good investment by tendering it. All those whose business demands their occasional presence in Wanganui will .doubt* less be heartily glad to learn that they can henceforth leave Waitotara by rail at 9.29 a.m. or at 6.20 p.m., and oxrive in Wanganpi at. 11 a.m. or at 8 p.m. On the other hand, passengers from Wanganui may leave at 7 a.m. or at 4.15 p.m., arriving in Waitotara at 8.40' a.m. and 5.45 p.m. respectively.
