NUX VOMICA FOR SPARROWS.

For the information of those who have decided to rid the country of as many sparrows as they possibly can (says "Agricola," in the Auckland Weekly News), I give the following receipt for preparing poisoned grain. Although by this time wheat may be all sown, yet oats are not; and it ie well known how the birds pick up the seeds, or destroy them after they have sprouted — sometimes, indeed, proving so destructive that a second or even a third sowing has to be made, which involves, of course both loss of money and time. A Southern paper says: — To make one gallon of poisoned wheat, put |lb. nux vomica into a large saucepan or earthen pot, on which pour a little boiling water, and let it stand close to the fire for five, or six hours. Then cut the nux vomica into small pieces; afterwards add four quarts of water, and let it stand and simmer by the fire for six hours, but do not let it boil. The liquor will then be ready to mix with the above quantity of wheat.
