THE NORMANBY SCHOOL COMMITTEE.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAB.

Sir,— :l have watched the literary tournament now going on with apparently unabated vigor, and I was at Brat at a loss to know what it was all about. I have gone to considerable trouble to get at the bottom of it, and I find the cause of this squabble lies all in a nutshell. I consider it right to show the parents of children attending this school how I arrived at a conclusion, that they may look out in January, when the next election takes place. On inquiry, I find that at the meeeting of committee, held to consider Mr. Hill's resignation, and Mr. McOutchan's appointment, one member recommended the appointment of Mr. McDowall as teacher, aud I understand he also canvassed some of tbe members' support d v ring the afternoon in M*i MftDowaJVs f&vor ,- bat Mr. Gibson appears to hare blighted his hopes of success, by saying " it would not do to allow a member of committee to teach the school ;" and finding that Mr. McDowall was not supported, the matter dropped, with Mr. McDowall alone voting against the appointment of Mr. McCutchan, Then the letters appeared in the Stab, accusing the committee with acting illegally, &c. Then Mr. McDowall writes a long letter in the Stab, of the 18th August (I request your readers to read this letter again), showing that the committee is incapable of knowing a good teacher, and that the Board, the public, and himself should--, appoint a " properly trained teacher." v(it is supposed he meant himself). Sit is also understood that Mr. McDowall taught a school in Dunedin long ago, but it Vras when Dunedin was young. Therefore, your readers will probably see, as I have done, that the paper war is carried on by Mr. McDowall as " Father of a Small Family." The very style of his letters will show at once that it is pedagogic and egotistical, and I wonder that any member of the committee is so stupid as to take any notice of letters Mr. McDowall may write under those circumstances. — I am, Ac.. ~.
