Carltle, Tuesday.

The town was favored on Saturday evening with a large detachment of the men engaged on the railway formation, at Kakaramea. The hotels were visited, and the result of this was soon apparent. At closing hours the men were refused any further supply of liquor, and became rowdy and quarrelsome. One man was locked up as an example to the others j but not until a very late hour was quiet restored. Those are the "Wellington unemployed,'" and judging from their conduct on Saturday evening, it is evident they will require strict police surveillance.

At a meeting held in the Albion Hotel, on Saturday evening, a committee was formed to carry out arrangements for a bachelor's ball, to take place shortly.

The second competition for Mr. Williams's presentation rifle took place at our range on Saturday. It must be won twice by the same person before being secured. Sergeant Batching (Patea) headed the list on the first occasion, and by the subjoined scores it will be seen that Private McLean (Waverley) succeeded in making the highest score on Saturday last. The conditions were: — Five shots at 200, 300, and 400 yards? 8-inch bull's eyes; and any position throughout. The following are the scores ;—
