The Otp.jjo Lounds bad another run at Kakaramea on "Wednesday. A large crowd of spectators were on the road, and those who attempted to cross country numbered about thirty ; but the sport was of a very weak character. The first run was for about half-a-inile; the second not much iurther ; and the hat went round between them. Only about two or three of the horses went in for real jumping — the remainder of the field appeared to crawl through the fences.
On Tuesday last, five persons appeared in answer to summones for allowing their horses to stray. All were fined in various small sums Mr. Hamerton appeared for Otto Haase, one of the defendants, and contended that, as there had been no negligence, the court had power to dismiss the case. The defendant, it appears, had leased the Hospital paddock, through which the public have a right-of-way, and the gate is frequently left open.
Mr. Fergus has arrived in Patea, and hif* firm, Messrs. Downes and Proctor, expect to commence operations very shortly.
