THE HOLE-AND-CORNER MEETING.
TO THE EDITOE OF THE STAE.
Sic, — I have perused a letter in the Stae, signed " Father of a Family ," referring to a " hole-and-corner meeting " that he wishes the people to believe was held by the Normtsnby School Committee. The meeting was convened under clause 72 of the Education Act, 1877, to consider the written resignation of the teacher. The clause reads thus : — " No recommendation to the board concerning the appointment, suspension, or dismissal of a teacher shall be considered, unless notice in writing to the effect that such business is proposed to be transacted, has been addressed to every member of committee." The clerk served those notices, and the committee were all present. Therefore, ' 'it is a base insinuation of " Father of a Family " to refer to this as a " hole-and-corner meeting." The writer also adds a postscript, which doubtless contains as much truth as his letter. If your correspondent is what he says, a " father of a family," it is to be hoped that his children are not very numerous. If they are, and copy the example of prevaricating he has set them, the Normanby School Committee hope they will not be sent to school there, to corrupt the rest of the innocent children during play hours. " Father of a Family " also states that our chairman went to the school on Monday to instal the new teacher, " but Mr. Hill, the prei sent teacher, I anderstaud, refused to give i , ap possession, stating that his resignation ( had not yet been accepted by the board." , How does " Father of a Family " know that Mr. Hill said this, as he was not present ? It is well known that Mr. Hill assigned no reason whatever for not accounting for and giving up the property in his charge, further than that "Be would not go. This statement also shows, what manner of man " Father of a Family is." If he was stating the truth, why did he hide himself under the " anonymous cloak," under shelter of which he is enabled to vent his spleen against a public body, by vile insinuations and misstatements. If he has any grievance against the committee, he should put his name to his letter. The committee would not then have to fight a shadow. — I am, &c, Membee of Committee.
