THE NEW PLYMOUTH HARBOR WORKS.

The Star.

SATURDAY, 24th JULY, 1880.

An investigation into the New Plymouth harbor scheme, and tbe alterations that have been made in the original plans, will probably take place in the Legislative Council on Tuesday next. The harbor engineer, Mr. Rees. and the secretary, Mr. Bauchope, have been summoned to appear before tbe committee of the Council, and all reports, minutes of proceedings, plans, &c., will have to be produced. In consequence, some of the principal settlers have retained Mr. Barleyman to watch their interests, and that gentleman started on Friday morning by coach for Wanganui. The much-despised " puny efforts " of the Hawera people have at length brought the matter to a crisis. The Taranaki News, in tbe article quoted in our last issue, remarked : — " This opposition is but another exhibition of that which is unhappily so prevalent amongst vs — intense selfishness, carelessness respecting who sinks so long as we swim, an ignoring of all conditions respecting the public good, and a general game of grab." The public of New Zealand will soon hare an opportunity of judging whether it is the people of this district, or some of the residents of New Plymouth, who are intensely selfish, and careless of the public good. The result of the investigation will be watched for with much interest.
