[per united press association. I [Specially Telegraphed to Star.] HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES. Thursday,. July 22. The Taranaki Iron Smelting Works Land Act Amendment Bill was read a second time by 37 to 18, after some disj cussion ; also the Wanganui Harbor and River Conservators Board Bill. The Fire Brigades Bill, and the Hospital and Charitable Aid Endowment Bill were passed through Committee. Friday, July 23. The Hon. M . Hall stated that the Government would oppose the proposal to print the native members' speeches in Maori, as a supplementary Hansard. The Treasury Bills Bill was read a second tune. On the motion to go into Committee of Supply, Mr. Seymour stated that the additional vote on the Estimates for the Chairman of Committees was placed i there without his consent, and even if passed, he would not accept it. Mr. Seymour also stated that hi the present circumstances of the colony, if the House thought proper to reduce the statutory
salary for the ofiic , he would ch.erfully acquiesce. In Committee, the vote for the compilation of a Maori history was reduced by £150. The Hon. Mr. Hall stated that the Goverument thought that hon. members' honorarium should be reduced by 20 per cent. The items — " Legislative Council — Addition to salary, Chairman of Committees, .£IOO ; Chairman of Public Petitions Committee, £500 ; and addition to salary, Clerk of Council, it'lOO" — were struck out.
