ARREST OF TE WHETU AND SEVEN OTHER NATIVES, NEAR PARIHAKA.
[Specially Telegraphed to Stab.]
(from our own correspondents.)
Pungarehu, Tuesday afternoon.
For some days past the natives have persisted in re-erecting the fences across the road, and on Friday last Te Whetu threatened to destroy the telegraph poles. Yesterday he and seven more natives were arrested whilst engaged in erecting the fence at Te Paripapara- (near to Major Goring's camp), for the fifth or sixth time.
The prisoners were sent into camp, and thence despatched under escort to New Plymouth last night.
The Paripara fence was again put up this morning, and two natives are now fencing quite close to the camp.
New Plymouth, Tuesday afternoon.
Eight natives, amongst whom was Te Whetu, were arrested yesterday afternoon at Werekino, and brought into town at two o'clock this morning.
The natives at Parihaka are very much excited over the matter.
The constables had a great straggle to secure Te Whetu.
Te Whetu is generally believed to have been the murderer of Bradeyi at Taranaki, some years ago.
