In the House to-day, the Government stated that an Inspector of Prisons had been already appointed at Home. Mr. Alexander Macdonald had been appointed Native Land Purchase Commissioner at a salary of £350, but the appointment was only temporary. The Maori Prisoners BilTpassed through committee without any material alteration. Mr. Sheehan's new clause, to provide that all Maori prisoners should be tried, was lost on a division by 35 to 2G. The third reading was carried by 36 to 25.
