WHAKAMARA ROADS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Sib, — I would like to ask Mr. Moore Hunter, through your columns, what instructions did Mr. Twigg get from him, or any one else, to expend .£2l upon Mr. West's contract ? Did not Mr. Allen state to the Road Board on Saturday that Mr. West had risen the bridge six. feet above the Engineer's specification level ? Is Mr. Huntev or any one else going to pass that account without some knowledge of the work done for it ? I have every reason to believe that Mr. Allen has made a very great mistake by stating to the Board that the bridge is six feet, higher than the Engineer's level. Of course, the Road Board will see when they get "the Engineer's report. I should imagine a lot of work would be done for dB2O. Why not have spent some of that on the Noonau road, as the petitioners wanted ? iJ2O would
have gone a long way towards clearing the slips off, &c. If Mr. Allen and Mr. Twhjg expended .£2O on their own responsibility, let them pay it, as other roads require some repairs. No power is given to expend more than JL% and then only with two members' sanction. — I am, &c,
Settler.
TO THE EDITOR OK THE STAR. Sjr, — Messrs. Pearce and Holgerson wrote a letter to the Hawera Eoad Board, asking for an extension of time, and the chairman answered, granting it. Surely, the chairman is not the "Board. There are three members living in the vicinity of those contractors, who ought to know the requirements of the place better than he does. The chairman of the Board has allowed the contractors and Mr. Allen to monopolise that roaJ to their hearts' content ; but if I want it, I shall use it, notwithstanding the extension of time that has been granted. How would the chairman like it if some contractors were to take a contract up near his place, and they were to send to the members from Whakamara, asking for an extension of time ? Would they be justified in giving it r Most undoubtedly not. Why should Messrs. Pearce and Holgerson be allowed time, providing they make a track for Mr. Allen? Why should everybody else be excluded from that road? Some one else has seed to sow there, as well as Mr. Allen. — I am, &c, Fair Play.
