ROAD BOARD SECRETARYSHIP.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Sir, — Observing a local in your issue of the 2nd June, stating that the Hawera Eoad Board had saved the sum of £5 by calling for tenders for clerk, &c, I would state, for your readers' imformation, that the Board gave Mr. Bate J-J35 last year for acting as clerk and treasurer, and the sum of 21s. per day extra as returning officer. Now, if you will observe, Mr. Gane's resolution was for calling tenders for the office of clerk, treasurer, and returning officer combined; and the office is now filled at i>3o; so saving the £5 and the 21s. per day, which amounts to more than £6 per annum. So much for a few shillings spent in advertising. — I am, &c, Ratepayer.
