Wellington, Friday night. The police have made a raid on slygrog sellers, and thirty-one informations have been laid.
At the Compensation Court, in the case of Kirkcaldie and .Stains t. the General- Government, judgment was given for the plaintiffs for .£4853, and fifty guineas cost. The claim was for .£5750, the value of land taken by the defendants for a new railway station.
In anticipation of the increase of the duty on beer, the brewers cleared nearly the whole of their cellars at a late hour on Tuesday night. The ship Benvenue has arrived from London, after an exceedingly rough passage. She experienced several heavy gales, which did great damage to the vessel.
Christchurch, Friday. The beer tax caused great consternation among the brewers. The Customs officers visited the breweries early on Wednesday to take stock. The amount of tax collected from five brewers will range from .£3500 to .£6OOO each.
