CARLYLE.

(from our own correspondent.)

Carlyle, Tuesday.

The Patea District Pastoral and Agricultural Association decided, at their last annual m eting, held a few weeks ago, to erect permanent show-yards on a suitable piece of ground, and hold the annual show hei'e. I say " annual show," but I believe there is a movement on foot to annex a horticultural society, which will aim at the encouragement of the cultivation of flowers, roots, and cereals, in which case shows would take place biennially. Now that the place is fixed in this centre, a hope is expressed that Hawera settlers will support what is strictly a county institution, and one, the beneficial effects of which cannot be over-estimated. The association have a register book open to all, in which supporters and members insert their names. The list is steadily swelling, but I regret to say that your district is not yet so well represented as it is to be hoped it will be soon. A Wanganui paper, of Saturday last, had another offensive paragraph about Mr. Foulis, the Government school Inspector, which you have perhaps observed. I hear that the writer was an unsuccessful candidate for the appointment now held by Mr. Foulis, which may possibly account for the continuation of his bitter feeling. The statement in our local paper, that Mr. Milroy's new hotel would be tenanted by Mr. Owen McKittrick, is contradicted by the proprietor.
