PLEURO IN AUCKLAND.
At the last meeting of the South Auckland Cattle Board, the following reports were read : — Cambridge, May 14, 1880.
" Sir, — I have the honor to report that on Tuesday last I examined several mobs of cattle, the property of the Waikato land association, with Inspector Eunciman. I noticed 12 heifers in one paddock looking well ; I do not think these wei-e imported cattle. We then examined several other mobs, many of which were not looking well, and had pleuro-pneu-monia in different stages. The cattle alluded to were all near the Scotchman's Valley. Looked at three shorthorn bulls near the Eureka station ; I did not like the appearance of two of them. 19 Hereford heifers and one Hereford bull were then examined: several of these heifers were not looking well; 15 Hereford bulls, several of them not looking well. A mob of about 50 shorthorn cows and heifers look better than any I have seen on the station. A mob of imported cattle, from which several were slaughtered some weeks ago, were looked at ; but they were scattered, and we did not see many of them ; I therefore cannot state whether they have improved since my last visit. " May 12th, visited Hukonui. I first saw a mob of 40 near the house, these I think had improved ; 36 in another mob were also looking better ; 31 in another mob were not improved since my last visit, or if there is any improvement it is only slight ; 77 bullocks, mostly three-year-old beasts, and two calves in a paddock before reaching the house at Woodlands, were looked at and appeai-ed to be doing well. We were unable to examine them closely, as it was raining heavily. — G. Naden, M.R.C.V.S.L.
" Sir, — I have the honor to report since the last meeting of your Board that I, in company with Mr. Naden, V.S., visited the Waikato Land Association's cattle at Waitakaruru, saw a number of imported cattle ; also at Eureka some of the cattle look a little better than they did when I last saw them, but many are still bad. I also saw the shorthorn cattle, they are still suffering from the effects of inoculation ; also the bulls and Hereford herd are bad from the same cause. I found four graves within 150 yards from the two farthest; they were buried from one foot to six inches. I also visited Hukonui, saw 107 imported cattlt, but saw little alteration since last visit ; also 70 fat cattle, some of them suffering from inoculation. From letter and information received, I visited Rukuhia, but am glad to say I did not see any symptoms of pleuro. — John Etjnciman, Cattle Inspector."
" Te Awamutu, May 14, 1880. " Gentlemen, — I have the honor to report to you that on Sunday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, I visited the farm of Mr. Burke here. The bull which I reported last as rather dull has recovered ; the rest of the cattle, except the calf with the bad tail and rump, look as if in good health. The said sick calf was killed in my presence on Wednesday and opened ; the lungs and chest were free of disease.
" I received the annexed letter on Wednesday evening, and started yesterday morning for the station of the Hon. James Williamson, where I only arrived at 2 o'clock p.m. I waited till Mr. Buttle, the manager, came home, who told me Mr. Runciman had been in the afternoon and saw the sick beast. I also visited the animal this morning, and found it looking healthy and well. Afterwards I looked over some 200 beasts on the same station ; all were seemingly in good health. — J. Gerse, Deputy Cattle Inspector."
