THE PLAINS CONTRACTS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE STAR.
Sir, — I am informed tbat the gravelling contracts between Otakeho and Kapuni are not all being pushed on with the expedition required in the terms of contract. Mr. Hughes' portion is rapidly reaching completion, although it is said the gravel is not so solid as it might be, a good deal of it being sand. Mr. McDevitt's contract is also being creditably performed in point of material and speed, although there is, perhaps, too much solidity about some of the lumps of stone. Mr. Johnston's, extending from Kapuni northwards, requires some serious attention. Very few drays have been at work, and I do not suppose that one-sixth as much of it has been completed as in the case of Messrs Hughes and McDevitt's contracts. One thing is evident: either Messrs. Hughes and MoDevitt are employing more men and teams than is necessary, or Mr. Johnston has not the required number on Ms contract. ' There have been several weeks of fine weather, and much might have been done to push on the work ; but this large gap will be a serious inconvenience to travellers during this winter. It is doubtful if Messrs. Hughes and McDevitt will Set through even theirs, but they have one their best, and the stretch of road gravelled by them will be a great boon to the teamster, and coachman, and general traveller, whilst their small gaps unfinished will be pardonable.— l am, &c, Citizen.
