CARLYLE.

h • (from our own" correspondent.)

Carlyle, Tuesday. A scratch football match was played last Saturday ; the teams were Ato M, and Nto Z. The game resulted in a win for the latter, with 2J points to nothing.

The Harmonic Society have commenced the practice of McForlane's new cantata " Lady of the Lake." At the last meeting, throe new members were elected and two were proposed.

Considerable uneasiness was felt here at the end of last week, by a rumor being circulated that the Government did not intend to commence work on the Carlyle branch railway, until after the Royal Commission on Railways had sent in then* report. It has since transpired, however, that such is not the case.

Diphtheria has been, and is still, alarmingly prevalent in the district, more par* ticularly on the Whenuakura block. I have not heard of any cases hi the town of Carlyle, and trust the disease will not extend its ravages any further.

I am sony to report that Mr. [Robert Homer has met with a slight accident. He was thrown from his horse, and was consequently unable to attend tho Harbor Board meetings.

I heard ot a disturbance having taken place among the railway navvies at Waitotara. The solitary constable stationed there was interviewing the authorities yesterday on the matter, and some of the delinquents are likely to be made to suffer.

How is shooting up your way ? I hear of several gentlemen going out occasionally, but as they do not blow about any results, I conclude birds are scarce.

The adjourned annual meeting of the Harbor Board was held on Monday afternoon. Present: — Mr. Sherwood (chairman), Messrs. Milroy, Balmforth, Gibson, Newland, and R. A. Adams. The annual report and balance-sheet having been read and inspected by the members present, they were, on the motion of Mr. Sherwood, adopted. The ordinary monthly meeting was then held, at which the minutes of the previous meeting, the correspondence inwards and outwards, and the pilot's and engineer's reports, were read. A letter was received from the Resident Engineer, Public Works Deportment, stating that the Government would enter upon certain hinds, the proprty of the Board, for the purpose of constructing the Carlyle branch railway. The letter was ordered to be acknowledged. Telegrams from the Marine Department were read respecting certain works sought to be, carried on by the Board; stating that they had been approved in Council. After passing accounts, the meeting adjourned.
