CARLYLE.
h • (from our own" correspondent.)

The Harmonic Society have commenced the practice of McForlane's new cantata " Lady of the Lake." At the last meeting, throe new members were elected and two were proposed.
Considerable uneasiness was felt here at the end of last week, by a rumor being circulated that the Government did not intend to commence work on the Carlyle branch railway, until after the Royal Commission on Railways had sent in then* report. It has since transpired, however, that such is not the case.
Diphtheria has been, and is still, alarmingly prevalent in the district, more par* ticularly on the Whenuakura block. I have not heard of any cases hi the town of Carlyle, and trust the disease will not extend its ravages any further.
I am sony to report that Mr. [Robert Homer has met with a slight accident. He was thrown from his horse, and was consequently unable to attend tho Harbor Board meetings.
I heard ot a disturbance having taken place among the railway navvies at Waitotara. The solitary constable stationed there was interviewing the authorities yesterday on the matter, and some of the delinquents are likely to be made to suffer.
How is shooting up your way ? I hear of several gentlemen going out occasionally, but as they do not blow about any results, I conclude birds are scarce.
