PLEURO-PNEUMONIA.

Pleuro-pueuraonia has obtained a partial footing in Auckland, and we wonder (remarks the Otago Daily Times) that the Cattle Board, who appear to be the proper authorities, have not taken prompt action. Inoculation has been successfully practised in Otago for some ten years, and seems to be as effective in checking the ravages of this plague among herds as vaccination is in the case of smallpox with the human subject. Although not generally adopted in England, this pieventive will probably soon be tried on a large scale there. We may instance a passage taken from the Veterinary Journal, a recognised Euglish authority, running thus : " There is at length a prospect of release from the ravages of one of the most serious scourges that ever visited the bovine population." The writer goes on to recommend inoculation. We are not concerned to urge the arguments pro and con. at any length, and feel content to leave the discussion of these details to those best fitted to treat them — that is, to the veterinary surgeons of New Zealand. What Professor Putry published at Leipzig,- or M. Dele at Antwerp, would be alike unintelligible and uniuteresting to our readers generally. It may be said in brief that in Holland (for example), where protective inoculation of the healthy is superadded to a vigorous slaughter of the diseased, the scourge has nearly disappeared. In the Scottish capital a Mr. Rutherford, whose experience had been gained from observation of the results obtained by Mr. Mitchell, of Melbourne, has not only achieved considerable practical success, but so far conquered prejudice as to be presented with a handsome testimonial by the Edinburgh dairymen. We .recommend the matter to the serious 1 consideration of those interested, and shall hope to see it settled by private action, and not left to be dealt with by Government.
