CARLYLE.
(from our own correspondent.) Carlyle, Friday.
Nothing of much importance has occurred since the first issue of your paper, which was circulated throughout our township, and, as far as I could judge, was favorably received. As a first production, which must necessarily labor under disadvantages, it reflects great credit on you^ and judging by your numerous adsrerifsinents, you appear to receive substantial local support. The Harbor Board held its monthly meeting on Monday last. Very little was done, but the next meeting on the 10th prox., promises to be more productive, as besides the ordinary business, there will be an adjourned general meeting, at which the Annual Report and Balance-sheet will be presented. The s.s. "Patea" was detained here two days beyond her advertised time this week, owing to the late southerly gale. She left yesterday, and will probably leave for Wellington again on Sunday or Monday. The appointment of assesors, under the Property Assessment Act t has been pretty freely commented upon. With all due deference to those gentlemen whose tenders have been accepted, it is apparent that something approaching to partiality has been shown in the selection. Tenders were sent in for the whole work by several gentlemen in the district, and the figures are stated to be considerably lower than the united tenders of those appointed for their respective sub-divisions of the County. Those whose tenders have been declined must be considered equally competent to carry out the work, and many persons fail to see the fairness of the selection.
The Agricultural Association will hold its annual meeting here on Saturday week, the 24th inst. It would be gratifying were this useful society to receive a greater share of support from your part of the district.
A Government parade of Nos. 1 and 2 Carlyle Rifle Volunteers takes place on Monday next, after which a meeting will probably be held to discuss the advisability of amalgamating the two companies. A rifle match takes place to -morrow between married and single members of th. above companies. The Carlyle Harmonic Society's quarterly concert takes place on Wednesday next. The first part of the programme will consist of Schiller's ♦ Lay of the Bell.' The concert has been delayed owing to the indisposition of one of the leading vocalists.
