London, April 8. The Bank of England reserve amounts to £15,875,000.
The wool market is strong. The arrivals to date for the next sales amount to 280,000 bales.
It is announced that Sadrali has been appointed to the sovereign rule at Candahar under British protection.
Three per cent. Consols are quoted at 98* ; brandy, 10s 6d. Berlin, April 8.
The Emperor of Germany refuses to accept the resignation tendered by Prince Bismarck, in consequence of the rejection of the Stamp Duties Bill. The Prince will therefore remain in office.
THE ELECTIONS. London, April 8. The elections ar« still proceeding. The Liberals have now gained 83 seats which were hold in the last Parliament by the Conservatives. Contrary to general expectation, the majority of the elections' for the counties are going in favor of the Liberals. An opinion is gaining ground that the present Ministry will resign before Parliament meets. A great Liberal demanstration took place to-day, at which Lord Hartington, tho leader of the Opposition, made a speech, in the course of which he denied, that the Liberal party was divided and said it was more united than ever. The election for Middlesex has taken place, and resulted in the return of the two former members, Lord George Hamilton and Mr. O. E. Coope. Mr. Herbert Gladstone, a son of the ex-Premier, who contested the election, was defeated. Mr. Gladstone has been elected for Midlothian, by a large majority. Dublin has returned one Home Ruler and one Liberal. The Right Hon. R. Lowe has been re-elected by the London University. The Times, in a leading article, says it has reason to believe that the Ministry will resign before Parliament meets. Leeds has returned Mr. Gladstone by an enormous majority. Lord Hartington has been re-elected for New Radnor without opposition. Both the Liberal candidates have been elected by a large mojority for Southwark, thus reversing the decision of last February, when a Conservative was elected to fill_tb,e psiwr of th< deceased Liberal member. xJoth Liberal candidates have been returned for Chelsea. -*- * *- The sitting members for Lambeth and Tower Hamlets have been reelected. Two Liberals have been elected for Marylebone by a large majority. Mr. Bradlaugh, the Radical candidate, has been elected by ft ■ large majority for Northampton. The Right Hon. James Lowther, Chief Secretary for Ireland, has been . defeated by a small majority for York. The election for Birmingham has resulted in the return of Messrs. John Bright, Muntz, and Chamberlain, the former Liberal members. For Hackney the Liberal members, Messrs. Holms and Fawcett, have also been re-elected. For Westminster the Right Hon. W. H. Smith (First Lord of the Admiralty) and Sir C. Charles Russell, the Conservative members, have been agaiu returned. The election for the City of London has taken place, and resulted in the return of Alderman Cotton, Mr. Phillip Twells, and the Right Hon. John Hubbard, Conservatives; and the Right Hon. G. J. Goschen, Liberal, all of whom represented the constituency in the last Parliament. Sir Julius Vogel was a candidate for Falmouth, but waa rejected.
