Hawera v. Opunake.

A match between the above clubs came off at Opunake on Saturday last. The clay was a perfect one for crick t. The Hawera men had some difficulty in raising a team, ami had to play one short, hut were allowed, a man to field. The match began at half- past ten, Opunake taking the field. Bayly and Mason were the first to go to the wickets, Cmnell and Morrison bowling. Bayly was caught off ConnelFs second ball, and Cowper took his place. Mason, after making 14, returned <>ne to the bowler, and gave way to Webb, who remained some time afc the wicket, but only made five runs,. Cooper during the same time adding 23 to' his score: Foley joined Cowper, and together they ran the score up to 94, when a bailer from Smith prove! too much for Cowper, who shortly previous to tbia had received a nasty, crack in the mouth, which cut his lip and loosened a tooth or two. His score of 44 was obtained without giving a chance, and would have been worth far more on a quicker scoring ground. Foley soon afterwards retired for 28 runs, and Biddiford carried out bis bat for 18, the innings closing for 132. The home team sent Martin and Robson to face the bowling of Foley and Bayly. Martin was caught off Bayly before a run bad been scored, and Heath took his place. Hobson made one and retired in favor of Bayliss, one of the best bats of the team, but rather out of practice. Heath added 10 to the score, and made way for Galbraitb, who kept the field very lively by running some very close ones, for which he had to pay the penalty, being run out after making 13. The fielding of the Hawera team was not up to the mark, but as so few out side matches have been played this season, there has been very little practice done. Tne following are the scores: — Eawsra. The last sitter at a private dinner jat Edinburgh, who had at length made up his mind that it was time to retire, announced his intention to the butler, and, fancying that he saw something like a smile on the servant's face, he turned gravely round,. saying, " Ay, John, I think I'll go to bed ; but I'm no' fou, John, mind that — I'm no, the least fou — but I'm just fatigued wi' drinking !" A well-known barrister at the criminal bar who prides himself upon his skill in cross-examining a witness, had an odd-looking genius upon whom to operate. " You say, sir, that the prisoner is a thief ?' " Yes, sir, 'cause why, she confessed it." "And you also swear she bound shoes for you subsequent to the confession ?" " I do, sir." " Then" — giving a sagacious look at the Court — " we are to understand that you employ dishonest people to work for you, even after their rascalities are known ?" "Of course ! How else could I get assistance from a lawyer ?" " Stand down !" cried the barrister.
