PICTURES IN THE FIRE.
"Sweet Nornh, come here, and look into flic firo : Perhaps in its embers good luck we may see : But don't come too near, or your glance so burning, c Will put it clean out, like the sunbeams, machree ! ••• Just look 'twixt the bars, where the black sod is smoking : There's a bWtset little valley, with rivers and tree 3, And ft house on the bank quite as big as the Bquire's — Who knows but some day we'll have something like these ? •'And now there's a coach with four galloping horses, A coaclimnn to drive, and a footman behind: "That shows that some day we 11 beep a fine carriage, And fly through the streets with the speed of the wind." •'Ab Dermott was speaking, the raindrops came hissing Down the' wide chimney. The fire went out ; While mansion and river, and horsfls and carriage, All vanished in smoko wreaths that whirled them about. Then Koran to Dermott this Bpeech softly whispered : " 'Twere'better to do than idly desire ; And one little hut by the road-side is better Than a palace with servants and conch in the five."
