HAWERA TOWN BOARD

The usual monthly meeting of the above Board was held on Monday evening. Present — Mr. J. Winks (chairman), Messrs.- Cockburn, Duffill, Stevenson, and King.

MINUTES.

The minutes of lastineeting were read and confirmed.

THE RESERVE.

The following letter was read from the Hon. Major Atkinson:—

" Wellington, February 10, 1880. '• My Deab Sib, — I have looked into thennatter of the proposed leasing, of a portion of Block 19, Hawera, referred to in yonr letter of the 19th ultimo, and find that while there does not appear to be any' authority by which the Govern-

nient can authorise the Board to lease the land in question, the 7th section of the Public Reserves Act, 1877, seems to contain such authority for the Hawera Town Board to lease the land for a period not exceeding twenty-one yeans. — I am yours very truly, " H. A. ATKINSON. " John "Winks, Esq., " Chairman Hawera Town Board. " P.S. — I am informed that the Crown Grant has not been issued yet. but I have given instructiont for it to be done at once. "H. A. A." It was resolved that Major Atkinson's letter be acknowledged immediately, and that he be requested to have the Crown Grants made out in such a way that the Board should have power to lease the reserve. ADVERTISING. It was resolved that the advertising required by the Board should be given to the Haweea and Noe.ma.nby Star. ) NEW BATE. It was proposed by Mr. Cockburn, seconded by Mr. Winks, — That a rate of 9d. in the £ be struck for the ensuing year. Proposed by Mr. King, seconded by Mr. Duffill, as an amendment,'— That the rate for the ensuing year be Is. in the £. The amendment was lost, and the resolution was then put and carried. THE FOOTPATHS. It was decided that the Clerk should write to the Colonial Secretary, informing him that the Board desired to get the footpaths gazetted, for the purpose of prosecuting trespassers. It was proposed that tbe solicitor to-the Board be consulted in reference to footpath crossings.

Accounts were passed for payment, and the Board then adjourned.
