BT&LIKG A SADDLE.
Carl Gungallwas charged with stealing a saddle, the pbperty of Constable Welham. Mr Parington appeared for the accused. j Constable Wham stated that on the Bth Feburary b lost a horse, saddle, and bridle ; but on ;he 10th the .horse "came back without ether the saddle or bridle. He saw the sadle on the 80th March, at Waihi ; it was ■. the possession of Sharp's son. He knev. the saddle to be bis. as the girth was oraded with his initials. He reported tfe matter to- Constable Cahill, of Hawc?. v The witness "vis cross-examinedby Mr. Parringtoh at sc£e length. Thomas.Parka deposed to having .sold the last vktnessa. saddle^ in. Feburary, last. The s«.dd> produced was the one? he had sold. Unstable O'Shea got- the
saddle from Gungall on the Bth Feburary. The accused tried to soli the saddle to witness. He was sure that the saddle produced \m the same. '•, Constable Cahill deposed that when :he went with the accused to the comjphunaiit, the accused told witness he had ■ ; purchased the saddle from Pearce, a i , plumber, and .had cot ths yirih -at J. • Meuli's, Hawera. Ho afterwards came to witness, and told him that the saddle was not the one he hod -purchased from * Pearce, but that it had been found by hiß . nephew. j Mr. Parrington asked for a remand till 1 next Court day, which waß granted. EMBEZZLEMENT. George Meyer was charged with embezzling the sum of £'dd> from T. Espagn", storekeeper, at Opunake*. Mr. Barleyman appeared for complainant, and Mr. Parrington for defendant. The cose was an adjournod one. Theodore Espagne stated that he was a storekeeper at Opundke. In the month of- Feburary he had engaged the accused to attend to the store. On the 3rd of April he visited the store for the first time after he had en'gogod the accused. When witness, went to tho store, he told the defendant to attend to his work, and that ne would go through tho books with him after the shop was .closed. Defendant refused to give an account of what bad been done, and refused to give witness the keys unless his wages were paid. Witness asked him for the books and the money, but tho defendant refused to give them up. Witness then went to the camp for assistance, and Sergant Smith, with a guard of two men, came to the store. Beagant Smith domanded the keys irom Meyer, whe then gave them up. Witness ■ took possession of the shop. Defendant said the money was in his box, but refused to open it. The police there- • upon opened the box, and found therein the sum of £88 Is lid. Defendant said it was his (witnesses) money. The accused arranged to meet witness at halfpast ten o'clock on the following day, in order to investigate the accounts, but did not keep the appointment. Witness then telegraphed to the police at Hawera to arrest the accused. Tho witness was cross-examined by Mr. Parrington, and, on the application of Mr. Barleyman, the case was remanded until the 16th instant.
