Cycle Touring Club

FORMED IN HUTT VALLEY Last Wednesday, at a public meeting convened by the Physical Welfare Branch in conjunction with the Hutt Valley Cycle Retailers, the Hutt Valley Cycle Touring Club was formed. Among those present were enthusiasts from Petone,. Lower Hutt, Silverstream- and others who cycled in the pouring rain from Lowry Bay to attend the meeting. There were also several new settlers from England who are anxious to continue their interest of cycle touring. A week previously the Wellington Cycle Touring Club was formed, and these two clubs, together with a Christchurch club of a few months' standing, will be the iirst of many more to be formed by the Physical Welfare Branch throughout New Zealand, and before many months it is hoped that a national Cycle Touring Association will be established.

The Hutt Valley formation meeting was chaired by Miss D. Gillies, of the Wellington District Physical Welfare Branch, who outlined the proposals for the new club and introduced Mr. A. Milne, a prominent member of the English Cyclists' Touring Club, who gave a hrief history' of the C.T.C., its present-day membership, and what it is able to offer its members in the way of insurances,- tours and literature.

Offer of Assistance

J\fr. Milne was followed by Mr, B. Elleray, secretary of the Cycle Retailers' Association, who assured those present that every assistance would be given by the association and by the cycle retailers. The following interim committee was elected:—President, Mr. A. Milne; secretary, Mr. V. Westbury; treasurer, Mr. G. Scott; club captain, Mr. D. Stenhouse; vice-captain, Mr. J. Carroll; committee, Mrs. Sanderson, Miss J. Holland, Messrs. B. Jonnassen, D. E. Stenhouse, I. Webster, P. Thomas, L. Gjles, P. Hartley and A. Simpson, Miss D. Gillies ex-officio. The first ride will take place on Sunday next, and cyclists will leave from the Lower Hutt Post Office at 10 a.m. for Akatarawa and return i in the late afternoon. i
