Tariff Changes

POWER BOARD RATES ENGINEER'S RECOMMENDATIONS In a report to the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board the general manager-engineer, Mr. I. R. Robinson, stated that for some time he had had under consideration a change in the rates charged for electricity for commercial and industrial purposes. At present 'separate rates are charged for commercial lighting, commercial cooking, commercial heating, commercial waterheating, poultry-farming, church heating, small power installations, medium power installations, and large power installations. The proposal is to reduce the above rates to three, and at the same time to have only one meter for each consumer. This would greatly reduce the work of meter-readers and office staff; would enable some 1250 meters to be recovered, and would ultimately be more satisfactory for this class of consumers. The new tariff has been designed so that as near as possible the total revenue from this class of consumer will remain as before. •The present revenue from these consumers is £106,403 per annum, and it is estimated that, under the new tariff the revenue will be £107,152, an increase of £745) per annum or 0.7 per cent. There will be considerable changes in individual accounts—some being increased and others decreased, and therefore the matter requires careful consideration.

Briefly, the proposal is that commercial lighting, commercial heating, commercial water-heating, church lighting, small power installations and medium .power installations be charged at one rate; commercial cooking and poultry-farming be charged at another rate, and that the K.V.A. rate be retained for very large consumers. A detailed-report of the changes will be available shortly.

A sub-committee consisting of Messrs. J. B. Yaldwyn, H. V. Horlor, and R. S. Stephen was set up to, consider the report.
