Baby Sitting
ASSISTANCE TO PARENTS
A scheme for “baby sitting,” to permit parents' to go out together for an occasional evening’s entertainment in Lower Hutt or Wellington, was decided upon by a meeting of the executive of the Taita Play Centre Association. w Members pointed out that* as most of the families in the State housing area contained small children and babies ft was almost impossible for husbands and wives to go out together at night. It was stated that the area Was devoid of places of entertainment, and that many of the housewives were “fed up” with the existing state of affairs.
It was suggested to the committee that there were a considerable number of secondary school pupils living in Taita who might be able to help parents by “baby sitting” in the evening.
The committee decided to bring the matter to the attention of parents with ’ children at secondary school and to recommend that persons obtaining the services of a “baby sitter” for the evening should pay a minimum fee of 2/6 to the “baby sitter.” ' Supervisory Duties The president, Mrs. J. P. A. Jamieson, reported “TTiat Mrs. D. P. Sinclair, who had had considerable experience as a specialist teacher and who has recently taken up residence in Taita, had offered to assist in supervisory duties ac the play centre.
It was decided to hold a fancy dress Christmas party early in December, to be restricted to children of the district up to seven years owing to the large number of children in the area.
It was reported that efforts were still being made to open a branch of the play centre in Taita North, but some difficulty was being experienced in finding a hall for the use of the children.
