The Hutt News Wednesday, September 8, 1948. OVERCROWDED SCHOOLS
Plans recently announced by the Wellington Education Board fob the provision of temporary classrooms at overcrowded schools in Lower Hutt will be welcomed by all those who have the interests of the children' a; heart. They are, of course, onlj a temporary expedient, but they should do something to relieve the present congestion and act as'a “stop gap” until something
permanent can be done to bring the school accommodation into line with the constantly-increas-ing needs. The great increase in the population of Lower Hutt has created education problems
of the first magnitude, aggravat- * eel by the fact that it coincides with a period when shortage of materials and labour has limited building. Judging by the' birth rate of the last few years, too, the school population is likely to grow for years to come, thus increasing the demand for. accommodation. . The provision oi sufficient schools in this rapidlyexpanding district is a problem that must- be .giving the authorities many; a headache, but they are fully alive to the situation and* will doubtless do their utmost to rnegt it at 'the earliest possible moment.
