PATENTS IN NEW ZEALAND

During 1947 2753 applications for the grant of letters patent were made ill New Zealand, slates the annua! report of the Commissioner of Patents, Designs and Trademarks. The applications covered nearly all classes of inventions, although telegraphy and telephony, with 461, far exceeded any other class, states the

report. Next in order were: Organic chemistry, 171; electric lamps and furnaces, 148; electric accessories, 124; buildings, 101; washing, cleaning and brushes, 93; amusements, 82; medicine and surgery, 81; domestic heating and cooking, 77; packing, compressing and stoppering, 70. Applications from Britain totalled 870, followed by New Zealand with 812, United States 089, and Australia 175. The remaining 207 came from 18 other countries. Fees amounted to £21,919, which was a record.
